Roaming Roy Visits Half A House! Mungerie House and Meze Me Cafe

This week, Roy decided he wanted to take his Grandpa out for a special meal to celebrate Fathers Day. He has many restaurants which he loves, but Mungerie House had a special attraction – great food, a lovely location and a small museum! He has been to Mungerie House before (when the photos were taken) and the food was absolutely delicious.

If you would like to visit Mungerie House it is located at 16 Bellcast Road, Rouse Hill. The house is not far from Windsor and not only is there a wonderful house and cafe to enjoy, there is an excellent playground only a short walk from the house. It is the perfect spot to enjoy a family outing.

Mungerie House is an amazing place – with a mysterious history. As Roy discovered last week, the house may be just the top story of another house altogether, Hambledon Cottage. Others think the house was specially built in the 1890s, or Roy has even been told as late as 1910! Whatever the story, Mungerie House is a beautiful old home, and a wonderful little museum. When we were there, one of Roy’s friends, Pam, was working was working in the tourism office, and she showed him around and told him all about it. The volunteers will happily show you around too! One of the places Pam showed him was the old well they discovered when they restored the house. The well is now safely covered over, but you can see where it was in the door of the restaurant!

The food at Mungerie House is provided by the wonderful Meze Me restaurant, which serves Middle Eastern cuisine. The menu is varied, with something for everybody, and even better, they serve excellent breakfast tagines, delicious lunches and exotic dinners! Roy went for lunch and shared a delicious tasting patter with me and his Grandma. Grandpa enjoyed a tasty Middle Eastern ‘pizza’. Desserts were particularly popular and we all had wonderful gelato.

Roy And Rover Enjoy Pies In The Sky

This week, Roy decided it was time to introduce his online friends to one of his favourite places to eat out. Roy loves pies and has tried many pies in his travels. Some of the best though come from a place not far from where he lives, Pie In The Sky at Cowan and he wanted to tell his online friends about these yummy pies. He also thought this would also be the perfect time to introduce his friends to his new friend, Rover. Rover is a little dog which Roy found wandering near our home. He was so enthusiastic about travelling around and seeing new places that Roy decided he would be a perfect companion. So this week Roy and Rover enjoy Pies In The Sky! 

If you would like to visit Pie In The Sky it is located on the Old Pacific Highway, at Cowan, between Berowra and Brooklyn. Pie In The Sky is open seven days a week, Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm and on Saturday and Sunday opening earlier, at 8am. They make a huge range of tasty meat pies, plus pasties, sausage rolls and delicious sweet pies. 

Although pie In The Sky has been selling their iconic pies here for about 20 years, before the restaurant was established the site and building were part of a service station along what was then the main road to Newcastle. Before the F3 Freeway opened the road was not only well travelled, but it was well provided for with several service stations along the section between Berowra and Brooklyn. When the F3 was built though, traffic on the old road decreased and slowly the service stations went out of business. Some of the old service stations disappeared entirely, but others became other businesses, like Pie In The Sky. For many years a wooden lifeboat was perched on top of the area where the underground petrol tanks were, and this was an icon of the pie shop. When the petrol tanks were taken out in mid 2012 though, the boat unfortunately fell apart. 

Pie In The Sky has developed a reputation for great food, a fabulous location and friendly service. The restaurant is also very popular with motor bike riders who enjoy travelling the scenic road and stopping for a delicious pie. Pie In The Sky sells not only the classic Aussie meat pie, but a variety of chicken, lamb and vegetable pies, from old favourites like Steak and Kidney to exotic flavours like Thai Chicken. Roy particularly recommends the Beef, Cheese and Bacon, while Rover is partial to one of the delicious Sausage Rolls. Pies can be either eaten straight from the bag or served with salad or mushy peas, chips and gravy. You can even have a hot drink and a fabulous fruit pie to finish off  your meal.

Roaming Roy Goes Gardening Part 2 - Edogawa/Gosford Japanese Garden Cafe

Last week, Roy spent some time visiting the Edogawa Japanese Gardens in Gosford (to find out about his visit click here). He loved the tranquil gardens, the beautiful Koi fish and the art gallery next door and decided it was a perfect place to enjoy a meal. The restaurant was lovely and he really enjoyed sitting out in the garden enjoying the winter sun. So this week, Roy takes you eating out!

If you would like to visit the restaurant, gallery and gardens, they are in East Gosford, on the shore of Caroline Bay. The street address is 36 Webb Street, and there is plenty of parking available in Webb Street and George Street. The restaurant is the Caroline Bay Brasserie and is open from 9am until 4pm. There is also a cafe for light snacks.

The Caroline Bay Brasserie is part of the Edogawa Japanese garden complex. The garden, set out in the Shoyu (wandering) style is a lovely place to have a stroll before, and/or after a delicious meal. There are good paths meandering through the garden, and the whole area is quite level, so it is the perfect place to take elderly people for a special day out. If you are taking young children though, make sure to supervise them near the lake and pond as the water features are not fenced. If you feel like a bit more culture, the complex also contains the Gosford Regional Gallery, which has wonderful, changing exhibitions.

After building up an appetite in the gardens and galleries, the Caroline Bay Brasserie is the perfect place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. They are open seven days a week and offer full meals, but also morning or afternoon tea snacks. Being close to the coast, there is plenty of seafood to choose from on the menu, and Roy enjoyed salt and pepper squid and prawns while his Grandma enjoyed coconut prawns. There are also lovely salads available, delicious soups and meals featuring chicken and beef, including the ever popular burgers.

This week, Roy decided it was time for another meal out. Spring had really hit, with beautiful sunny days and warm weather, and he felt like sitting outside and eating some really good food. I was happy to oblige his desire, but we didn't have time to go too far afield. Luckily, I knew of a restaurant close by which has fabulous food, a great view and plenty of history to boot. The Bobbin Inn seemed the perfect choice for enjoying a perfect Spring day.

This week, Roy really wanted to do something a little different. In the past, he has visited a few restaurants, but they are unusual places for him to go - after all, Roy has a reasonably small appetite! Usually, Roy stays in the car while we have lunch, or even just stays home, but recently, he has confided that he is really intrigued by the idea of 'eating out'. He asked if perhaps we could add a new section to the Roaming Roy posts, just for restaurants, and I thought this was a great idea. The first place Roy wanted to share for eating out serves a type of food which you might have had before, Gozlemes, but takes them to a level Roy has never had before!
