This week, Roy was asked to organise a delicious and decadent for a dinner party dessert, but it needed to be quick to assemble before the party and easy to store, all ready for serving. Roy thought long and hard about what he could do, before deciding on a delicious trifle combination which he had once invented for a party a few years ago. Everybody had loved the results, and the trifle was truly decadent, so it seemed perfect for the occasion. So this week, Roy Creates Decadently Delicious Black Forest Trifle.
You Will Need:
- Chocolate cake – Roy used his fool proof chocolate cake, which makes 2 loaf cakes. He had enough left over to enjoy himself! To find out how to make this delicious cake, click here.
- A jar of Morello cherries in juice
- A packet of port wine jelly
- 500 millilitres of vanilla custard
- 450 millilitres of cream
- 1 tablespoon of castor sugar
- ½ a teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 150 grams of dark chocolate
Optional – many trifles have some liqueur added, and if you want to do this (adults only!), Roy suggests using Kirsch.
Method:
- The day before you need to make the trifle itself, make up the port wine jelly. To do this drain the cherries, keeping the juice, and put the cherries aside. Warm up the juice and then add to the jelly crystals, following the amount of liquid suggested by the jelly instructions. Top up with water if needed (you should follow the directions on the jelly packet!)
- Cut the chocolate cake into cubes and line the bottom of a clear trifle dish with ½ of the cake. (If you’re using kirsch, sprinkle a little over the cake to moisten)
- Sprinkle over half the cherries
- Cut the jelly into pieces (Roy used a spoon to do this) and spread half over the cherries and cake. Roy just dropped pieces here and there.
- Spread over half the custard
- Repeat the layers of cake, cherries, jelly and custard.
- Whip the cream with the castor sugar and vanilla extract and spread over the top of the trifle
- Chop the chocolate and sprinkle evenly over the top of the trifle
- Chill to allow the flavours to develop
- Serve and enjoy!
