This week, Roy needed to make a delicious slice for a morning tea with some friends. He knew that one of these friends loved dried fruit and particularly dates, so thought he would make something using dates. Luckily, one of his other friends, Aunty Jill, had recently shared her recipe for a superb date slice. Best of all, the slice was quick and easy to make. His friends loved the slice and asked if he would share the recipe. After getting permission, he agreed and so this week Roy Creates Aunty Jills Date Slice.
You Will Need:
- 125 grams of butter
- 3/4 of a cup of brown sugar
- 3/4 of a cup of chopped dates
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- 1 cup of plain flour
- 1/2 a teaspoon of vanilla essence
Method:
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees and line a slice tin (20 by 27 centimeters) with baking paper
- Combine the dates, butter and brown sugar in a saucepan and melt everything together. Set the caramel date mix aside to cool.
- When the date mixture is cool, add the egg. If you are concerned there might be enough heat left to scramble the egg, put a bit of the caramel into the lightly beaten egg and mix, then pour the egg into the remaining mix.
- Add the vanilla and flour and mix everything together thoroughly.
- Pour the mix into the slice tin, smooth the top and bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
- Let the slice cool in the tin and then turn out, cut into squares and enjoy.
