With Christmas coming up, Roy wanted to create some beautiful decorations to decorate his home and garden. Earlier this year he created flowers using soft drink bottles and they have been his garden for several months and still look beautiful. He wondered if he could make decorations using the bottles too so cut out a few simple templates and set to work. He was really pleased with the results and decided to share them with his online friends. So this week Roy Creates Soft Drink Bottle Christmas Decorations.
You Will Need:
- Clean, dry, empty soft drink bottles.
- Scissors
- A craft knife
- A marker or pen
- Paints and a paintbrush
- Optional: glitter glue, stickers, stencils to decorate your ornaments.
- A hole punch
- Ribbon or string for tying or making garlands.
Method:
- First, decide what sort of decorations you want to make. Roy decided to make old fashioned bauble shapes which he could make balls for a tree. You might like to make 'lights', or candy canes – the sky’s the limit!
- Cut the bottle open. To do this, find the indented lines which run around the bottle just above and below where the label was. Cut along these so that you have the piece in the middle which is straight left. Now, cut down the piece in the middle and press it flat so that you have a piece of plastic like Roy has.
- Next, draw the shapes of the ornaments you want to make on the bottle with the marker. Roy used a handy pepper shaker to help him make his shapes.
- Cut the shapes out and, if they are too bendy, put them under some heavy books for a couple of days until they flatten. Roy didn’t mind his being a little irregular.
- Paint your decorations however you like. Roy painted simple patterns on his baubles. He found they needed two base coats to get good coverage before he could decorate them.
- Allow the decorations to dry completely.
- If you like you can add stickers, glitter or use glossy colour of paint to make designs on your decorations.
- Punch a hole in the top of your decorations where you want to attach something to hang them up with and tie a loop of string through the hole if you would like to hang them on the tree. Alternately, run a piece of ribbon through the holes of several ornaments to make a garland. You can use them either inside or to decorate a tree outside.
- Enjoy!
