This week, Roy decided that with Halloween coming up he wanted to do something to get in the spirit. Roy doesn't celebrate really Halloween, but lots of his friends do and have been asking him for ideas of things to make and do. He liked the idea of making a Jack-O-Lantern, but thought carving a pumpkin might be a little difficult for some of his younger friends. He also thought a pumpkin might be a bit big, so he turned to something a little smaller, an orange. He wasn't sure if his idea would work, but was thrilled with the results, so this week Roy Creates An Orange Jack-O-Lantern.
You Will Need:
- A large orange (Roy used a navel orange)
- A sharp knife (and an adult to help use it)
- A spoon
- A melon baller
- A pen
- A tealight and matches
- Optional: Roy also used a few small bug toys to decorate his Jack-O-Lantern and covered a plate with foil for it to sit on.
Method:
- Using the knife, cut the top off the orange as Roy is doing above
- Cut around the top of the orange pulp and use a spoon to pry this plug of orange out.
- Now, use the melon baller to scoop out the orange flesh and juice. You can put this in a bowl and eat it later if you like.
- When your orange is empty, rinse it out and leave it upsidedown to drain.
- When the orange is dry, draw a spooky face on the outside using the pen.
- Use the sharp knife (with an adult to help) to cut out the face and throw away the pieces of peel you remove.
- Carefully put a tealight candle inside the orange and, if you like, arrange it on a foil covered plate and decorate with bugs or spiders
- When it is dark, ask an adult to help you light the candle and enjoy your spooky lantern!
- Note - Roy is told that battery operated tea lights are available in some discount shops. This would be a great and safe alternative to a real candle.
