Earlier this week Roy and I examined Cluedo and the history of board games. While we were researching, Roy came across some information about early board games which reminded him of an African game called Mancala. He has played Mancala many times in the past, but he didn't realise just how ancient this form of game was, dating back over 3000 years. He thought he would like to share this simple game with his online friends, but the question was how. After a little more research he hit upon the idea of using an egg carton to make his own mancala board - thanks for the idea Uncle Roger. So this week, Roy Creates A Mancala Game.
You Will Need:
- An egg carton. If possible, make sure your egg carton is the type with a smooth, flat lid.
- Scissors
- Stickytape
- 36 buttons, marbles, pebbles or paperclips. You can really use 36 of anything you like!
- Optional: Paint and a paintbrush
Method:
- Use the scissors to cut the lid off the carton. Put the lid aside to use later in the project.
- Cut the small strip of cardboard used to keep the carton closed off the carton and put it in the recycling.
- Cut the lid of the egg carton in half down the centre, as Roy is doing above.
- Slide the pieces of lid partially underneath the bottom of the egg carton, one on each end, as shown above. These will make your 'stores'
- Use the stickytape to secure the top and bottom of the egg carton together.
- If you like, paint your Mancala board and wait for it to dry
- Put three of the buttons, pebbles, paperclips or marbles (or whatever you decided to use) into each of the holes in the egg carton, leaving the stores empty (these will be used to collect the pieces you win)
- Now, you are ready to play the game.
- The game is really easy to play, but there are many different sets of rules for Mancala, so Roy thought it would be a good idea to send you to a site which outlined them all in detail so you could see what games you might want to play. To find out how to play the different games, click here.
