This week, Roy has decided to finish off his rug project by teaching you to make a really funky, matching wrapping paper to use to wrap the rug as a gift. This wrapping paper isn't just for rugs though - it is a great fun paper which can be used for all sorts of things. Remember, your imagination is the only limit! Roy did a similar project last year using Autumn leaves. Click here to find out about it.
You Will Need:
- All those 'ends' of wool you have been saving
- Big sheets of wax paper
- An old newspaper
- An old teatowel.
- An iron and ironing board.
- An adults help.
Method:
Note: Roy isn't giving his rug away so he made a smaller piece which he plans to hang in the window and enjoy as a work of art.
- Spread some newspaper out over the top of the ironing board to protect it from any escaping wax.
- Lay a big piece of waxed paper over the top of the newspaper. You want the shiny, waxed side to face upwards.
- Use some of the ends of the wool to make a funky pattern on the paper.
- When you are happy with the design, lay another piece of waxed paper over the top, with the shiny, waxed side facing the wool.
- Lay a tea towel over the top of the wrapping paper, being careful not to shift any of the wool inside.
- Now, ask an adult to help you with the iron. You want to iron the two pieces of paper (with the towel on top to protect the iron from escapee wax) until they stick together with the wool inside. The iron needs to be set to hot and dry.
- If you need a bigger piece of paper (either longer or wider), overlap the ironed piece slightly with a new piece of waxed paper. Add more wool and then repeat the ironing process, making sure to iron the new piece of waxed paper onto the old piece. You are essentially sandwiching the already ironed piece of paper between new pieces of waxed paper. You can repeat this step as many times as you need to.
- Now use your paper to wrap your rug. You could even use any offcuts of paper to decorate a matching card! Alternately, make a smaller piece and use it as a piece of art. It looks great hanging in a window.
