A couple of weeks ago, Roy created some apple heads by carving apples and leaving them to dry. Now, the heads have dried, and they are ready for bodies and to dress up. There are many ways to make bodies for apple people, but Roy thinks this one is the most effective. It makes strong, rigid bodies which stand up on their own so that you can display your apple dolls.
You Will Need:
- 600 millilitre Plastic water bottles. You will need one bottle per 'person'.
- Scraps of material or felt.
- Wool
- Scissors and a craft knife
- Glue
- Toothpicks
- A couple of corks
- Rubberbands
- You might also want some lace and ribbons or other decorative bits and pieces!
Method:
- Cut the bottom off the bottles (you might need an adults help with this!) Roy and I cut the bottles along one of the indentations near the bottom, but you could cut yours to different heights.
- Put the cork into the neck of the bottle. Roy and I needed a big, champagne cork because the wine corks fell through and into the bottle.
- Use the craft knife to make a small hole in the cork and push the toothpick into the cork. You want to have most of the toothpick sticking out of the top of the cork. This is what you will put your apple on.
- Cut some material a little wider than your bottle is high. You want enough material to wrap around the bottle and to fold over the top and under the bottom so that you can't see any bottle at all!
- Wrap some material or felt around the bottle to make clothing. You want the material to reach up higher than the cork and below the base of the bottle.
- Wrap a rubberband around the neck of the bottle to hold the material in place.
- Fold the material over to cover the rubber band.
- Push the apple onto the end of the toothpick so that it is attached to the doll.
- Your basic apple person is complete, but you might want to add some hair or other clothing. If you do want to do this, wrap some wool around your hand to make a bundle. Slip it off your hand and tie another piece of wool around the middle to hold it in place.
- Now, snip through the loops to create hair and glue it to your apple.
- Roy decided to put a shawl on his apple, so we used a piece of lace and pinned it to the apple head. Then, we used a piece of ribbon around the neck of the bottle to hold the shawl shut.
- Trim your hair into the style you want.
