This week, with Easter coming up Roy decided it would be the perfect week to make a special egg cosy which he's been wanting to try out. His Grandma made one just like it when she was just in kindergarden and he thought it was so cute he would like to show you how it was made. With the little chicken popping out of the top of the egg it is the perfect Easter gift, and best of all, you can even give it to people who can't eat or don't like chocolate!
You will need:
- The templates
Download Egg cosy pattern and carefully cut out the templates. You can change the size if you like, but the egg template Roy used is 11cm tall.
- Felt - Roy and I used purple felt for one side of the egg, bright green for the other side and yellow for the chicken. We also used some little blue felt spots for eyes and cut out some felt letters to decorate the egg cosy with. We used a B and an L because Roy is going to give it to his Auntie Blanche but you can decorate it however you like.
- Thin Wool - Roy decided to use a contrasting colour, so we used pink but you could use whatever colour you like. You could also use embroidery cotton if you can't get any wool.
- Ribbon - Roy used red
- A wool needle or a needle with a very big eye
- Scissors
- A pen or pencil
- Glue
- A skewer or very small hole punch. Roy did this as a threading exercise so it is very easy but it you would prefer you could simply use blanket stitch or loop stitch to sew the egg cosy together.
Method:
- Trace around the pattern pieces on to your felt. You will need one of the chicken pieces and 2 of the egg shape.
- Carefully cut out the felt pieces.
- Turn the two egg pieces so that the tops match. One will need to be turned around for this to work.
- Carefully use the skewer or hole punch to punch holes about 5 millimetres from the edge of the felt along both of the sides of the egg. Leave the bottom and the jagged top as they are for the moment. You will want your holes to be about 5 millimetres apart. You might need an adult to help you with this.
- Thread a piece of wool onto your needle and tie a knot in the end.
- Starting at the bottom, start threading your wool through the holes, looping the wool around the edge as you go. Look at the picture below if you need some help.
- When you get to the end loop the wool through on the inside around the last stitch (see the picture below for an example). Loop the wool around the needle once and it will form a knot.
- When you have sewn up the sides of your egg, slot your chicken in to sit at the top of the egg, popping out the the broken piece.
- Now, like before, punch two holes in the middle of the top. You want the holes to go through all three layers of felt.
- Thread the ribbon onto your needle and sew it through the two holes so that both pieces stick out the front of your egg cosy.
- Tie the ribbon in a bow.
- Use the glue to stick the eyes on.
- Decorate as you like.
- Enjoy this yourself or give it to someone special as an Easter Gift!
