Roy and I thought long and hard about what to write today, Christmas Day. Many of you will be busy with family and friends, and it is really a bit late to give you a recipe or craft to make for Christmas - after all Christmas is already here! Then, inspiration struck - we would teach you to make a a simple but delicious brunch (a meal you have when you slept too late to eat breakfast and it's almost lunchtime) for Boxing Day. To ensure that our idea worked, we thought we should have a trial run and it was delicious!
You can make this a sweet or savoury meal, depending on what you like. Roy and I loved our version, using leftover Christmas ham but these are just ideas, let your own imagination create other taste sensations! Remember, read the whole post before you begin so you know what you need and how to do it! You might also need an adult to help you with this!
Basic French Toast
You Will Need:
- A frying pan or griddle
- Bread, cut into thick slices (Roy and I used store bought, pre-sliced seeded bread)
- Eggs - we used one egg per 1 or 2 slices (it will depend on the bread you use, some will absorb more than others)
- Milk - we just used a splash in the eggs before we beat them.
- Butter or oil (for frying)
Method:
- Heat up your frying pan or griddle. You don't want it too hot or you will burn your toast. So try a medium heat to start and adjust it as you need.
- Add a splash of milk to your eggs and beat them lightly with a fork
- Melt a little butter, or a little oil, in your frying pan, just enough to coat and so the bread won't stick
- Dip your bread into the egg mixture and allow it to absorb some. You need to coat both sides of the bread. Only soak as many pieces as you will be cooking at once
- Place the bread into the frying pan or griddle and cook each side until it is golden brown and the egg is cooked through.
- Serve with toppings of your choice.
Roys Savoury French Toast
You will need:
- The ingredients for basic French Toast plus:
- Bread - you might have some left from Christmas day, garlic bread would be good!
- Mixed dried herbs, or fresh if you have them!
- Tomato
- Leftover Christmas ham
- Bread - you might have some left from Christmas day, garlic bread would be good!
Essentially, make your French Toast as above but . . .
- Add the herbs to your egg mix and combine.
- Place the bread, ham and sliced tomato into the frying pan or griddle. Cook each side of your French Toast until it is golden brown and the egg is cooked through. Fry your tomato and ham to your own tastes!
- Serve your French toast topped with the fried Christmas ham and tomato
For a sweet alternative try using fruit bread (you could even use leftover pannettone) and add a pinch of cinnamon and a teaspoon of sugar to the egg mixture in the 'basic French toast' recipe. Cook it as normal and serve with fruit (sliced banana would be good) and maple syrup!
