Imagine, it is the night of May 31, 1942. You live a little house by the harbour. All is quiet in Sydney, and you are settling down to sleep when at about 10:30, an alarm sounds. It is a frightening sound, and you know it can’t mean anything good. You hurry out of bed and take shelter in the area set up for such occasions. Just a little shelter, protected by sandbags. It is a frightening night, but you don’t really know what is going on. It isn’t until later that you hear what has happened, that Sydney has come under attack by the Japanese!

This week, with the anniversary of the Japanese submarine attack on Sydney Harbour so close, Roy decided it was time to take his online friends somewhere related to submarines in Sydney. There were a few choices, the place where the torpedoes hit, the tunnel at Luna Park people hid in during the attack, but one stood out above the others, the anti-submarine net which stretched across Sydney Harbour.

This week, Roy needed to make an afternoon treat, in a real hurry. He had promised to make afternoon tea for some of his friends, but when he went to cut the slice he had made, it just hadn't worked. He had made it loads of times, but for whatever reason, it was a disaster, and he needed to make something else. There was only one choice, a quick and easy slice recipe which one of his Grandma's friends, Pam had shared many years ago. It makes a beautiful, cakey slice which everybody loves, and it is ready in a less than an hour - including cooking time! So this week, Roy Creates Speedy, Cakey, Fruit Slice.

Imagine, you are standing on Sydney Heads and it is 1924. You have come out here early, to make sure you have a perfect viewing in front of you for todays events. You had a picnic, and now, just on the horizon, you can see the ships approaching. These are the ships of the British Navy, brave ships who have, or will serve and protect Britain and their allies. Then, closer they come, and you can make out the grandest of them all, HMS Hood, the battlecrusier. What a ship, and what a pleasure it is to see it sailing into Sydney Harbour.

This week, Roy decided that he really wanted to go bushwalking. Roy loves to go for a good long walk, particularly if there is the promise of good views, beautiful scenery and peace and quiet. One of the places which he loves to walk in is Barrington Tops National Park, and he really wanted to take a wander through the majestic scenery in this area. He was very disappointed when I told him it was too far away to go for a single day! He decided instead that he would go for a walk down memory lane and look at some of the photos we took when we were last there, and decided to share them with you. Roy has visited several other places in the area, and if you would like to see his entries about them, click here.

Earlier this week, Roy was fascinated to see the pea sheller I showed the children, and to learn a little about the history of peas. Roy loves peas, in whatever form they come, and really wanted to make something using them. He thought of making a dip, or a stew, but settled on an old favourite, pea and ham soup. Roy loves soup, especially on these cold days we have been having, and pea and ham is one of his favourites. He thought he would like to share this soup with you too. So this week Roy Creates Pea And Ham Soup.

Imagine, you are living in the 1940s. You are lucky to have a small yard in which you can grow fruit and vegetables to feed the family, and with the children always so hungry it is great to have 'free' food always available! You grow all sorts of things, but you particularly love the pea and bean plants. So easy to grow, they produce lots of food and some of the peas and beans can even be dried when they are shelled and put aside to use later! Of course, you would probably hate them if you had to shell them all by hand, but you are lucky to have a pea sheller your mother gave you for a wedding present.

This week, Roy decided he wanted to visit somewhere quiet, somewhere breathtakingly beautiful and somewhere which retains its old world charm. He loves visiting these sorts of places, and is always fascinated to discover the stories behind them, and behind their names. Govetts Leap in the Blue Mountains of NSW is one such place. He thinks it is one of the most beautiful places in the Mountains, with a stunning view, but without the crowds you find at lookouts like Echo Point.

This week, with Mothers Day nearly upon us, Roy wanted to make something which would be yummy for his Grandma to have as a breakfast in bed treat. His Grandma, I'm sure, will love this idea, but she has been trying to keep her meals healthy recently, and so I told Roy he needed something a little lighter than bacon and eggs or pancakes with syrup! I suggested making some muffins, because I remember having them often when I was a little girl, so Grandma must like them. He thought this was a great idea and, secretly so that it would be a surprise, we raided Grandma's recipe books. We found this recipe for blueberry muffins which was very easy, and decided to share it with you so you could also make a surprise breakfast in bed. So this week Roy Creates Mothers Day Breakfast - Blueberry Muffins.

Imagine, you are a child living in the 1800s. You don't have a lot of time for fun, as you always seem to be working, but one thing you love is the quiet time with Mother and Father when you can just enjoy each others company. It is rare that Mother and Father have the time to play with you, but occasionally, they get down the treasured set of dominoes and play a game or two with you and your siblings. You don't know where the dominoes came from, you don't think your parents would have spent the money on a set, but you love it all the same.
